How do I access a decentralized exchange?

I'm trying to wrap my head around this. I'm not sure how a DEX works, but I want to try it. How do I access and initiate a peer 2 peer transaction?

Decentralized exchanges (DEXs) are peer-to-peer cryptocurrency exchanges where transactions take place directly without third parties. They leverage smart contracts to execute transactions seamlessly. The contracts establish the prices of different assets from other marketplaces and utilize liquidity pools to enable trades. These trades are settled on-chain. Most DEXs have open-source codes, implying that the public can use existing codes to develop other competing innovations.
