Non-fungible tokens, also known as NFTs, are unique unsubstitutable digital assets crafted from the same technology used in creating cryptocurrencies. NFTs help their issuers represent digital and physical items like art, music, videos, real estate, etc.

They contain ownership information coded into their architecture, making them easy to trade between parties. Depending on the issuer, owning NFTs could come with a myriad of benefits for the holders. These perks could range from online passive income options like staking to access to exclusive events in real life. Due to its various utilities, NFTs have an expanding set of use cases that cuts across various global industries.

The Environmental Impact of NFTs

NFTs are minted using the proof-of-work model, making the process of creating them an energy-intensive endeavor. Any blockchain-related process involving the use of high amounts of energy, such as electricity or gas, will most likely negatively impact the environment.

This is because the majority of NFTs are created on the Ethereum blockchain, which is still a proof-of-work blockchain (at the time of writing). However, other "greener" chains like Solana and Cardano that utilize proof-of-stake could be catching up to Ethereum's share of the NFT market.

Aside from the native blockchain used to create NFTs, the marketplace where they are sold also affects NFTs' carbon footprint. NFT marketplaces that depend on the Ethereum blockchain and its proof-of-work mechanism further increase the energy demand for NFTs, making anyone buying or selling NFTs on the Ethereum network partially responsible for the emissions generated. To put this in perspective, some experts say using the Ethereum blockchain costs as much electricity as the country of Lybia!

Minting and trading NFTs on Ethereum definitely leaves a carbon footprint and consequently affects climate change. However, knowing exactly how much of an effect on the climate it has remains elusive. This is because the NFT space is still fairly new, and not enough research and studies have been conducted on this subject.
