Ethereum’s increasing popularity, particularly in smart contracts, DeFi, and NFTs, has made it a potential competitor to Bitcoin – though its market capitalization and market share are still half that of Bitcoin. First, Ethereum outperformed Bitcoin in all the quarters of 2021, even during the crypto sell-off in the second quarter. Secondly, Ethereum’s shift to Proof-of-Stake (PoS) mining mechanism is more lucrative (you spend less energy and don’t require expensive hardware) and eco-friendly than Bitcoin’s Proof-of-Work mechanism.
